I have a 1969 Browning A5 20 gauge, The serial number starts 69Z-XXXXX. The 'Z' is the question, The browning site shows that a 'G' or 'M' should follow the mfg. Date indicating a Lightweight or Standard model. This is Serial Number 002, with a Serial Number 001 still with Browning and actually unfinished, marked as a Prototype. If you have the Browning Auto-5 Shotguns, The Belgian FN Production book that just came out in a second, revised edition, you will see on page 184 Serial Number 001 Prototype, with a full explanation of this special edition with high grade wood in satin finish and ornately carved and checkered. John Browning himself called it his greatest achievement at the time, of course that was before the 1911.45 caliber semiautomatic handgun. If you own one of these guns and it has a letter in the serial number, the letter is a code that represents; G = Lightweight, M = Standard Weight, V = 12 Gauge Magnum, S = Sweet Sixteen and X = 20 Gauge.
