If this is the wrong place for this, please let me know. Since January 1st 2016 multiple men aged 21 to 30 have disappeared from areas surrounding southern Maine only to later be found dead in local waterways or on local beaches. Here is the info I have gathered.

  1. James E Dyer, 23, from Saco, Maine. He disappears on the night of New Years Eve after 1 am, making the date January 1st 2016. He is last seen leaving a bar called Pearl in the Old Port district of Portland, Maine with two friends who would later state that he was walking with them and then suddenly was not. James E Dyer is found dead in the Portland harbor February 20th, 2016. Multiple people have stated that his body was not consistently decayed for having supposedly been in the water for nearly two months even with the freezing temperatures. His death is ruled to be caused by drowning and hypothermia.

  2. David Breunig, 21, from Westbrook, Maine. He disappears on the night of February 26, 2016 as he walks to meet friends at a nearby bar. He was last seen leaving a party on Crosby Street in Orono, walking in the direction of a railroad bridge that crosses the Stillwater River, which flows into the Penobscot. His body is found in the Penobscot river April 22nd, 2016. Again, several sources point out that his body is not sufficiently decayed, he is still wearing his shoes and has his phone and wallet despite the strong, riptide like current of the Penobscot river. Others say he should've been washed out to sea had he fallen in the river on the night of his disappearance. His was a Maine Maritime student where he was trained in water rescue, meaning he was a strong, confident swimmer. His death is ruled to be caused by drowning and hypothermia.

  3. Mathew Foster, 23, from Scarborough, Maine. He disappears on the night of June 11th, 2016. He is last seen leaving the Oasis bar in the Old Port district of Portland, Maine at around midnight. He is a diabetic and requires daily medication. His body is pulled from the Portland harbor on June 21st, 2016.

  4. Evariste Munyensanga, 29, he lived in Portland, Maine but was originally from Rwanda. He goes missing November 18th, 2016 after being dropped off at his apartment in Portland, Maine by a friend. He is known to have Rheumatic heart disease that requires daily medication. His body is found on a beach in Cape Elizabeth, Maine in a state of extreme decay on January 17th, 2017. His body is so decomposed that the body is initially thought to be that of a white man, but is later identified as Evariste. While likely unrelated to his death, it should be noted that Evariste was featured in a documentary, “Into the Heart of Rwanda,” by filmmaker Rajah Bose. He was known as an avid long distance runner and enjoyed running the coastline of Portland, Maine.

  5. Sebastian Kelley, 30, from Westbrook, Maine. Disappears sometime between the night of June 16th, 2017 and the morning of June 17th, 2017. Following an anonymous tip, the police search Presumpscot River in Westbrook, Maine for his body, but find nothing. Sebastian Kelley is still missing as of October 3rd, 2017.

  6. Tanner Smith, 30, from Portland, Maine. He goes missing on September 8th when he is supposedly supposed to be driving from Unity, Maine to Portland, Maine. His abandoned car is found before he is. A few days later, on September 11th, a single newspaper article claims that he was found by police, dead, by 'apparent suicide' after jumping off a bridge into some body of water. Very little information is available about his death. An unreliable source says that his new medication caused his suicidal act. This case may be unrelated.

  7. Avery Smith, 23 (sometimes listed as 21 but confirmed to be 23), from Hope, Maine. He recently disappeared on September 22nd, 2017, though he was supposedly seen with 'two individuals' on a beach in Cape Elizabeth, Maine a day or two after his disappearance. His abandoned car was found sometime around September 25th, 2017. Police have repeatedly called him 'despondent' and 'suicidal'.

UPDATE: 10/9/2017. AVERY SMITH FOUND ALIVE AND IN GOOD HEALTH.

8. Brycen Couture, 23, from Newmarket, New Hampshire. He goes missing September 27th, 2017. He is last seen at a friend's house on Broadway in Dover, New Hampshire which is about an hour away from Portland. He has a medical issue that requires him to take medication every day. Found deceased on 10/4/2017.

I have heard theories that these cases may be related to the supposed 'Smiley Face Killer' that is active in and around Boston, but I believe them to be the work of an entirely different serial killer.

I have noticed that the hypothetical serial killer took a lengthy 'break' between January 2017 and June 2017, and that since then the number of disappearances has increased dramatically. His/Her MO seems to adjust itself based on the questions raised by previous investigations.

I am no criminal expert and have no training in the field, these are just my notes and findings, so please take them with a grain of salt.

UPDATE 10/4/2017 Brycen Couture, missing since September 27th, 2017 has been found dead in a wooded area by 'apparent suicide' just like Jacob Marsden, an individual from New Hampshire who I had thought may be related to this theory.

Here is the info regarding Jacob Marsden. Because he was not found in the water like the previous victims, I did not include him in my original post. There is one other case from New Hampshire I have not shared as well, a young 16 year old from New Hampshire who was found dead in a storm drain shortly after going missing. [UPDATE 5/13/2019 It has been brought to my attention that the unnamed 16 year old died accidentally ]

Jacob Marsden, 23, from Kensington, NH. Jacob Marsden goes missing July 24th, 2017. His white Jeep was found abandoned the next day. He was found dead in Salisbury, Massachusetts in a wooded area by 'apparent suicide' on August 5th, 2017.

Manchesters Serial Killer

Firstly, I'd like to say thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read and comment on this post. So many of you have given your thoughts and theories on this little mystery (or for some of you, series of mere coincidences), and I've loved reading them all. While I do not have any further information regarding the original cases detailed below (not yet at least), I wanted to share with you some recent water related deaths in Maine. While the deaths I am about to detail do NOT relate to the below cases (at least I don't think), I found them strange and unique enough to share here with you.

  1. Paul Benner, 33, from Thomaston, Maine. Paul was last seen between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday (January 4th, 2018) when he went clamming off Long Cove Road in the village of Tenants Harbor. Paul's father reported him overdue at about 11 p.m. Later that same nigh, his boat was recovered, empty, as well as his clamming gear. He was missing for several days until his body was recovered on January 8th, 2018. During the time of his disappearance, extreme winter weather inhibited police and coast guard efforts to search for him. Throughout the search, law enforcement and other rescuers used a variety of advanced equipment to search the icy waters for his body, and were assisted by local boaters in breaking up large segments of ice. While no direct report claimed this, I believe his death to simply be accidental at this time.

  2. Matthew Dubien, 46, from Greenville, Maine was last seen the night of March 6th 2018, after he left a nearby restaurant on his 1995 Polaris Indy 500 snowmobile, said Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service. The next morning, rescuers in an airboat saw what appeared to be a helmet on the shore of Moosehead lake. Shortly after, Matthew's body was recovered from the icy waters of Moosehead lake. His death was the 6th snowmobiling related fatality in Maine this year. While I do not consider this case related to the ones below, it should be noted that his death is still currently being investigated by authorities.

  3. Peter Manual, 22, from Bangor, Maine. The very early morning of March 2nd, 2018 Peter created a disturbance outside a Bangor bar. Police arrived, and before they could speak to Peter, he fled on foot and ran out onto the ice of Kenduskeag Stream. Initially, he isolated himself on a chunk of ice, where he sat out of police reach. They attempted to use rescuers to coax him off the ice, but he began to stand and sit erratically. Rescuers also attempted to throw him a rope, which he refused to grab. Moments later he slipped off the ice, then went underneath the water and the current took him down stream, where police lost track of him. Peter is still currently missing.

An expert criminologist has joined grieving families in believing a serial killer who drowns his victims might be behind the deaths of dozens of people found in Manchester's rivers.

An astonishing 85 bodies - mostly men - have been pulled from the city's waterways in the last seven years.

The cause behind the majority of the deaths are believed to have been established, but 28 are still classified as 'unexplained'.

The body of trainee sports teacher Nathan Tomlinson (left) was pulled from the River Irwell in February 2011; David Plunkett (middle) went missing in April 2004 before being found in the Manchester Ship Canal; and Souvik Pal (right) was discovered in the Bridgewater Canal in 2012. All three deaths are shrouded in mystery

That has led to puzzled relatives questioning whether the mystery that surrounds each of those passings is in fact what links them.

Many are now speculating whether their loved ones were the victims of a serial killer they have dubbed The Pusher - a psychopath who murders his targets by bundling them into the icy waters.

Souvik Pal (pictured) was discovered in the Bridgewater Canal in 2012

They believe their claim has considerable substance not only because of the disproportionately high numbers of people to have died in the rivers, but due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths of several men.

Appearing on a new Channel 4 documentary titled 'Manchester's Serial Killer?', former senior detective Tony Blockley will tonight examine the evidence purporting to support the allegation that the same person may well be responsible for a catalogue of killings.

His probe focuses on the deaths of three men: Souvik Pal, 18, and 21-year-olds David Plunkett and Nathan Tomlinson.

The body of Mr Pal - a design student in Manchester - was discovered in the Bridgewater Canal three weeks after he had been ejected from a 2012 New Year's Eve party at the Warehouse Project nightclub in Trafford Park.

A coroner recorded an open verdict into his death, admitting she did not know how he ended up in the water.

Disturbingly, CCTV images recorded the teenager walking in the company of a man whose identity has never been confirmed minutes after leaving the club.

Santanu Pal, Souvik's father, said: 'There must be involvement of a third party. It needs to be investigated to find out if there is really a serial killer.'

David Plunkett had been at a concert at the Daytona Racetrack, also in Trafford Park, before he went missing in April 2004.

He was found dead in the Manchester Ship Canal. Police are adamant the 21-year-old drowned accidentally.

That view, however, is not shared by his parents Michael and Anne.

They are adamant evidence they experience first hand points to David's death being the result of sinister and deadly act.

The pair called their son's phone the night he died, only to hear terrified screams.

Anne said: 'The screaming and howling was so unearthly that you just felt it had to be something.'

The third death being examined is that of trainee sports teacher Nathan Tomlinson, from Stockport.

Trainee sports teacher Nathan Tomlinson (pictured, as a schoolboy, left, and before he died, right) was pulled from the River Irwell in February 2011. He had been out with friends two months before. Despite still being clothed, the 21-year-old was found without his coat, phone, passport and wallet

Despite still being clothed, the 21-year-old was found without his coat, phone, passport and wallet.

An inquest into his death failed to establish if Mr Tomlinson died before or after hitting the water.

Craig Jackson, a criminologist lecturing at Birmingham City University, believes that the high number of similar cases makes it unlikely that they are all either accidents or suicides.

Appearing on a new Channel 4 documentary titled 'Manchester's Serial Killer?', former senior detective Tony Blockley (pictured) will tonight examine the evidence purporting to support the allegation that the same person may well be responsible for a catalogue of killings

He previously told the Daily Star: 'Canals are not popular suicide spots, especially for men.

'They are, however, popular dumping sites. And water can be a sure way to erase DNA evidence.'

Greater Manchester Police have dismissed the idea, insisting the claims lack evidence.

Manchester's Serial Killer? airs tonight at 11pm on Channel 4.
